Guest Lecture by Sergio Zatti: „Retoriche del desiderio narrativo: Ariosto e Sartre“

On 15 November Sergio Zatti will give a lecture on the dynamics of narrative desire in Ludovico Ariosto and Jean-Paul Sartre. The event is run by Manuel Mühlbacher and Martin von Koppenfels (project “Dialectics of Adventure in the Early Modern Period”) in cooperation with the Department of Italian Studies of LMU Munich. The lecture will be delivered in Italian.

Sergio Zatti is professor of Comparative Literature at the Università di Pisa. He specializes, among others, in the Renaissance epic, the poetics of literary genre and autobiography. His studies on the relationship between epic and romance in Ariosto and Tasso have marked the field and have been translated into English.

Abstract:

Partendo dalle riflessioni freudiane di "Jenseits des Lustprinzips" e dalle suggestioni metodologiche di Peter Brooks ("Reading for the Plot"), intendo riflettere su come operano le diverse retoriche narrative nelle strutturazione dei testi: ho scelto, per campioni di queste retoriche -che nelle mie intenzioni vogliono esemplificare tipologie opposte- un testo di pura fictio come l’Orlando furioso –che per le sue stesse vicende compositive di work in progress si muove all’insegna della prolessi e della progressione- e un classico dell’autobiografia moderna, Les Mots di Sartre (1964), per mostrare come, in questo caso, un intero genere –quello autobiografico- si conformi, all’opposto, a istanze di retrospezione narrativa.
