New edited volume: Adventure in the Modern Age
05.10.2020
Our latest edited volume, recently published with Brill, is dedicated to the persistence and transformation of adventure in modernity.
Abenteuer in der Moderne (ed. Oilver Grill and Brigitte Obermayr)
Narrating adventure can give rise to accusations of indulging in the trivial. However, even canonical authorsof the modern age found it difficult to dispense with adventure prose entirely. The present collection of articles examines the use of adventure in both literary and theoretical texts dating from the late 18th century to the 1920s. The texts discussed range from Goethe to Karl May, from Rider Haggard to Woolf and Proust, and from colonialism to psychoanalysis and Russian Formalism.
